  3. What a thoroughly thought out commentary and letter to Warren.

I had only one uneasy feeling with the use of the word "misunderstanding" as in Biblical misunderstandings provided by Warren. Did you mean Warren's interpretations of the bible? In the political sphere this is called "spin".

To me "misunderstanding" implies a lack of communication. Rather I sense that you are pointing out that there is only one right way to interpret the bible and many wrong ways.

Perhaps you mean interpretation since it is the religious leader's stated mission to bring the teachings of the bible to the people. This is a job that requires interpretation of ancient contexts and force-fitting them into a 21st century world.
The word interpretation does not imply one person is right and the other wrong and for this reason it may be more clear.

On one side of your argument you stand strong for the tenets and stories in the bible as moral instruction. Then on the other hand you think that religion is a major obstacle to civil marriage rights because the bible and its adherents attach morality to marriage and morality is a social construct perpetuated by religious and political leaders.

I totally agree that the way to civil marriage is through the law. Even though to interracial marriage is legal today it is still frowned upon by many a religion. Tradition changes slower than laws. I would only suggest that this issue be debated in a constitutionally based format rather than religious. Even Warren (obviously) understands this political vs religious approach as can be seen from Prop 8 support.

Warren's comment's are at best contradictory and seem pruned for his audience. At times, he doesn't look like he's comfortable with what he is saying. For this reason, I wonder if he be gripped by fame and fortune and that this is fueling his opinions on civil marriage.

    Peace
